Cohasset Celebrated Its 250th Anniversary in 2020
Historical Timeline
A look at key dates in Cohasset’s long history...before and after it became a town, 250 years ago.
Cohasset was founded in 1770 covers nine square miles nestled along the rocky shores where greater Boston Harbor ends and Massachusetts Bay begins. The former fishing village offers some of the most picturesque spots in all of New England. Yes, Cohasset is rich in history and scenic views, but what makes it special is our close knit community.
In 2020, in the throes of a pandemic, a community came together to host a year-long 250th anniversary celebration. The celebratory year’s theme was Commemorate. Celebrate. Dedicate and included events, tours, and celebrations for the entire community. The anniversary commemoration showcased the close-knit town to honor the past, celebrate the present, and to set the course for our future.
The First 250
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Cohasset, The Cohasset Historical Society and the Cohasset 250th Anniversary Committee decided to expand the 1970 Bicentennial Heritage Trail’s 94 houses to include the 250 earliest houses and structures in town and produce a book that would illustrate all of them along with the stories that make them unique.
The result is a magnificent book “The First 250 – Cohassets Earliest Houses & Places” authored by Lynne DeGiacomo and Paula Morse with photographs by Keith Conforti. Copies of this publication are available for purchase.
