Reconstructing the First Minot's Ledge Light

This new exhibit features digitally "re-engineered" images, created by Joe Lebherz, of the original engineering and construction of the original Minot’s Ledge Light before its destruction in 1851. Each digital image took about two months to create over the span of five years.

Joe Lebherz has dedicated the last twenty years to preserving and restoring lighthouses. He served as a curator at the Maine Lighthouse Museum and was a founding member of the American Lighthouse Foundation. His notable works include building the replica of the second Minot’s Ledge Light Watch Room with the beacon’s original rotating mechanism, Fresnel lens, and 640-lb bronze fog bell at Government Island. Additionally, he crafted a 5-foot scale model of the first Minot’s Ledge Light using brass fittings to investigate its collapse 16 months after construction.

Open Hours:

Thursdays 3:00 - 5:00 PM

Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Eminently collectible and highly visual, postcards are often acquired as a souvenir of an exciting vacation, even today. Before the era of modern communication devices, postcards were an easy way to send a quick note to a friend or loved one without having to compose a full letter.

Featuring the vast historic postcard collection of local collector Paul Antico and modern-day photographs, Then and Now explores how Cohasset’s beautiful vistas and buildings have changed over time while examining the act of sending postcards, a nearly lost method of communication. Then (the postcards) and Now (the photographs), in their matchup of sites and locations, reveal how much Cohasset has changed and yet remains the same.

Exhibit hours: Monday - Friday, 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Rhapsody in Red: 200 Years of Cranberry Growing in Massachusetts

Rhapsody in Red: 200 Years of Cranberry Growing in Massachusetts

Open 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from June 15th - July 1st

In celebration of Massachusetts Cranberries' bicentennial, Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association curated (through public historian Hilary Goodnow) the traveling exhibit retrospective "Rhapsody in Red: 200 Years of Massachusetts Cranberries," a one-of-a-kind original exhibit showcasing the Commonwealth’s official state fruit, generously supported by the Cranberry Educational Foundation in its mission to introduce the American cranberry, cranberry farming, and its heritage to the public. The timeless exhibit, created in 2016, explores commercial cranberry growing in Massachusetts. It focuses on key themes of the cranberry industry’s rich history, commitment to environmental stewardship, technological innovations, and its growing diversity.

Cranberries and cranberry bogs are an iconic element of Massachusetts’ historical, cultural, and natural landscapes. As one of only four commercially-grown berries still native to New England, the cranberry draws strong historical ties to the earliest inhabitants of the Commonwealth, including the first English settlers. Today, in the 21st century, growers strive to keep the tradition alive as part of the common cultural landscape by combining sustainable agricultural practices with environmental stewardship. The industry protects essential upland and wetland habitats, harnesses renewable energy such as wind and solar power, and adopts new technologies to reduce water use on bogs.
